New TV Ad: Time To Give Troops The Respect They Deserve

Democratic Party of Oregon Urges Action

Portland - The Democratic Party of Oregon is airing a new ad urging Oregonians to call members of Congress and tell them it is time to give troops the respect they deserve. All of the contributions used to fund these ads are completely transparent and reported consistent with federal rules.

Something is seriously wrong in Washington, D.C.  Members of Congress have voted to raise their own pay and supported tax giveaways for millionaires.

[McClatchy Newspaper, 7/30/07; Vote 196, 5/23/03]

At the same time they have sent American troops to war in Iraq, but denied a tax deduction for their combat pay and proper health care when they return home.

[Vote 344 11/17/05; Oregonian, 2/8/2005]

"Democrats across Oregon recognize that fulfilling our commitment to our troops is one of America's most important responsibilities," DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. "Democrats in Oregon delivered for veterans and men and women in uniform in Oregon."

Oregon Democrats worked to:

  • Improve health care for veterans.
  • Cut taxes for more members of the Oregon National Guard.
  • Expand financial aid for veterans pursuing full or part-time study or training.
  • Establish new public service opportunities for veterans.

Democrats in Congress have plans to give America's veterans and men and women in uniform the respect they deserve, including:

  • Fully funding the VA health care system.
  • Extending full VA and other benefits to members of the National Guard who have been deployed overseas.
  • Revising deployment guidelines that require servicemen and women be given at least as much time at home as they spend on each tour of duty.
  • Increasing funding for mental health services to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Immediately enacting concurrent receipt benefits to allow disabled veterans to collect their full retirement pay when they leave service.
  • Ensuring proper screening and treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury for returning veterans.
  • Passing a new G.I. Bill for the 21st Century (H.R. 2385) to help the veterans of our recent conflicts get a college education or job training.

Script For "Respect"

Jeff Merkley:

Something is seriously wrong in Washington, D.C.  When Congress votes to raise their own pay and cut taxes for millionaires, then sends American troops to war in Iraq, but denies them a tax deduction for their combat pay and cuts their health care when they return home.

I'm Jeff Merkley and our troops have done everything we ask with distinction.  We need to start giving them the respect they deserve.
